With the intention of reducing CO2 emissions the LIGHTCAR research project was born. AIMPLAS has developed new sustainable materials and processes to reduce vehicle emissions by reducing weight. 

A new investigation confirms that replacing petroleum-based jet fuel to a new sustainable fuel derivative of the mustard plant can reduce carbon emissions by up to 68%. 

The Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) develops new cement mortar using recycled materials for the construction of houses, that demonstrate a high capacity for fire resistance.

 

For years, the European Community promotes an initiative to the European Institutions and the Members States, based on the new legislative framework of circular economy, to recycle, reduce and value waste with the aim of cut down on the primary materials. The Research Group on Building Technology and the Environment (TEMA), of the Higher Technical School of Building (ETSEM) of the UPM, has been testing eco-efficient mortars to reduce the environmental impact of the materials used in the sector of construction. This group demonstrated in its various studies that the mortars with recycled fibres offer resistance, absorption and permeability values, exceeding the minimums required by current regulations and there are very similar to the values of mortars with commercial fibres.

 

In the latest study, researchers of the Polytechnical University of Madrid (UPM) analyse the behaviour against the fire of cement mortars added with mineral wool from construction and demolition waste. The results obtained indicate that the recycled mortars have good behaviour against fire. The incorporation of the residues allows maintaining adequate mechanical properties and avoiding the explosive detachment behaviour of mortars. They have also shown that cement mortars with mineral wool residues do not burn, do not add more load to the fire, and do not release gases or asphyxiating fumes in the case of a fire.

 

In conclusion, it can be affirmed that incorporation of mineral wool residues as a reinforcement in cement mortars is a feasible alternative in terms of their behaviour against fire, in addition to improve the mechanical-thermal behaviour after a fire and being a sustainable alternative that allows reducing up to 50% of the volume of the sand used. They have also shown that cement mortars with mineral wool residues do not burn, do not add more load to the fire, and do not release gases or asphyxiating fumes in the case of a fire.

The engineer Ana Rodes Carbonell, director of the R&D projects at the Textile Aitex Institute, has revolutionized the textile world by developing a weave that can produce energy through solar radiation.

  

The project came with Rodes master’s final project, entitled "Integration of flexible photovoltaic cells in textiles". After a year of research and work, the result was a prototype of canopy that can charge a smartphone and support LED lighting. This fact can be possible thanks to the flexible texture able to integrate photovoltaic cells that can transport energy and adapt to the outside climatic conditions.

 

Until now, it only had been possible to integrate photovoltaic cells in crystal, ceramic, façades, and roofs.

 

According to Ana Rodes in “El País”, the study aims to take advantage of the space of certain structures, exposed to the sun, that we can find in a city, such as canopies, tents, pagodas, parasols, arbores and covers, so that can do shadow and at the same time produce electricity in a more sustainable way.

The terms of the agreement foresee that Air Products exclusively includes green ammonia in order to distribute it internationally and, in turn, produce green hydrogen for the transport sector.

 

Air Products, together with ACWA Power and NEOM, has declared the signing of an agreement worth $ 5 billion for the construction of a manufacturing site that will produce 'green' hydrogen from ammonia and that will be exported worldwide. The manufacturing site, powered by renewable energy, will be owned by the three partners and will be built at NEOM, a new concept of sustainable way of live located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia.

 

It is a joint project that becomes the first association that produces within NEOM for national and international partners, being leaders in the field of renewable energy, and will be the cornerstone of its strategy to become an important actor within the world hydrogen market. It is based on proven technology that will include the innovative integration of more than four gigawatts of renewable energy, both solar and wind, as well as its storage; the production of 650 tons of hydrogen per day by electrolysis using thyssenkrupp technology; nitrogen production by air separation with Air Products technology; and the production of 1.2 million tons of green ammonia per year from Haldor Topsoe technology. The manufacturing site is expected to start operating in 2025.

 

The terms of the agreement foresee that Air Products exclusively purchases green ammonia to distribute it internationally and, in turn, produce green hydrogen for the transport sector.

"Taking advantage of NEOM's unique potential in terms of solar and wind energy to obtain hydrogen from water, this project will be able to obtain totally clean energy on a large scale and save the world more than three million tons of CO2 per year, in addition to eliminating the emissions responsible for air pollution and other pollutants equivalent to more than 700,000 vehicles ”.

 

For his part, Mohammad A.
