As the outbreaks intensify - in Spain and also in other parts of the world - the ingenious ideas and projects that have been brewing these months to put barriers to the expansion of COVID-19 come to light. Since its use has become a rule in many countries, one of the markets that is most successful is that of technological masks.
A Japanese technology startup called Donut Labs is developing the C-Face Smart Mask, a smart mask that connects to your mobile and is capable of transmitting what you say via message and even translating from Japanese into eight other languages.
It is a white plastic device that fits the standard face masks we wear, which filter the air and protect from exposure to the coronavirus and other pathogens. The rubbers of the C-Face Smart Mask are passed through the openings of the device so that the mask underneath is perfectly positioned and adjusted.
To make it work, you just have to connect it via Bluetooth to a dedicated application for mobile phone and tablet. As we said, the gadget can transcribe speech in text messages, but also make calls or amplify the user's voice.
Taisuke Ono, CEO of Donut Robotics, explained to Reuters that the technology behind this project stems from that of robots they had previously been developing - which were to be used as guides and translators for a Tokyo airport - and adapted to create "a product that responds to how the coronavirus has reshaped society."
In a historic moment when we are asked to maintain social distance, a mask that amplifies the voice or transcribes what you say in digital text can make sense. Especially, as the company says in its promotional video, in day-to-day situations where you have to interact with someone, such as at the reception of a company or a hotel -or even a public building or a hospital-, the supermarket cashier or a business meeting. The goal is to help others understand better what you say - and vice versa-.

The app also promises to translate what is said into up to eight languages, including Spanish, so it can be particularly useful for people who travel frequently. They even say they are "planning to install an augmented reality feature."
