The study is oriented towards the creation of a predictive mathematical modelling that estimates the usefulness of each food residue. The technical analysis includes the selection of the ideal industry for this purpose, as well as the economic profitability.

The European project Model2bio, coordinated by CEIT, and also member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), investigates the creation of a tool capable of predicting and granting a second use to waste from the agri-food industry in order to reuse it and / or recycle them.
Among other factors, the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the agri-food waste flows, the best recovery route and it potential for the recovery of resources and energy, as well as seasonality and geographic location, will be considered.
The project, with a duration of three years and financed by the initiative Bio-Based industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) of the Horizon 2020 Program, has the participation of industrial companies, technology centres, universities and different organizations that will provide a heterogeneous vision and complementary.
The research process includes testing and validation of the meat, vegetable, dairy and beverage industries in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Greece.
The results and solutions generated by this initiative will have a great environmental impact, since half of the global waste generated in the world comes from the agri-food industry (3 million tons / day).
Its inclusion in a circular economy process constitutes one of the great challenges of a global scope. Not surprisingly, it is aligned with the European objective of significantly reducing the amount of bio-waste sent to landfills.
